Ikrima was a Tabi'i scholar, the freed slave (mawla) of Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA), and one of the most important transmitters of Ibn Abbas's vast knowledge of Quranic exegesis and hadith. He was of Berber origin and came to Ibn Abbas as a captive or slave, eventually earning his freedom. He spent his life in devoted study under Ibn Abbas and became so thoroughly trained in tafsir that many scholars regarded his explanations of Quranic verses as the most reliable after those of Ibn Abbas himself. He traveled widely across the Islamic world — to North Africa, Khorasan, and elsewhere — transmitting knowledge and acquiring narrations from various companions and Tabi'in. His character was debated by some early biographers, but the vast majority of hadith scholars including al-Bukhari accepted him as reliable, and his narrations appear in all six major collections. He passed away around 104–107 AH.
