Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari (RA) was born in Medina and belonged to the Khazraj tribe. His father Abdullah ibn Amr was among the Ansar who took the pledge of Aqabah before the Hijra, and Jabir himself grew up in the immediate orbit of the Prophet ﷺ. He participated in nineteen military expeditions alongside the Prophet ﷺ and was a constant companion in many of the most significant moments of the prophetic mission. He narrated over 1,540 hadiths, placing him among the most prolific companion narrators. His narrations cover all areas of Islamic practice and are especially notable for highly detailed accounts such as the full description of the Farewell Pilgrimage, which is one of the most complete accounts of the Hajj ritual in the Sunnah. After the Prophet's death, Jabir lived long enough to become a major teaching authority in Medina for the Tabi'in generation. Scholars traveled from distant regions to hear from him. He reportedly lost his eyesight in old age. He passed away in Medina around 78 AH, having spent the final decades of his life transmitting prophetic knowledge to the next generation. His narrations are foundational across all major hadith collections.
