Ibn Abi Layla, whose full name was Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla al-Ansari, was a leading Tabi'i scholar and judge of Kufa. He was the son of Abi Layla al-Ansari, a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ, and grew up in Medina before settling in Kufa. He narrated from numerous Companions including Umar ibn al-Khattab, Ali ibn Abi Talib, Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, and others (may Allah be pleased with them). He served as a judge in Kufa during the Umayyad period and was respected for his legal knowledge and his commitment to applying Islamic law justly. He is known in the Kufan legal tradition for his legal opinions and for the transmission of hadith to the scholars who came after him. His narrations appear in the Sunan collections and he is considered reliable by the scholars of rijal. He participated in legal debates with other leading scholars of his time. He passed away around 82–83 AH.
