AbuRimthah, may Allah be pleased with him, was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who is known primarily for his narration describing the physical appearance of the Prophet ﷺ. His account is preserved in several of the hadith collections that deal with the Prophet's physical attributes (shama'il), and he describes seeing the Prophet with two locks of hair falling on either side, wearing two green garments, and having a mark between his shoulder blades. This narration is among the detailed accounts of the Prophet's appearance that scholars have used to build the comprehensive picture of his physical description preserved in works like al-Tirmidhi's al-Shama'il al-Muhammadiyyah. AbuRimthah is also known for a narration in which his father and he together came to visit the Prophet ﷺ, and his father asked about the mark of prophethood (khatam al-nubuwwah) on the Prophet's back. His narrations appear in the Sunan of al-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud and are particularly valuable as eyewitness testimony about the Prophet's physical characteristics.
