Jundab ibn Abdullah al-Bajali, may Allah be pleased with him, was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ known for his directness, strict piety, and austere character. He embraced Islam and lived according to a rigorous standard of religious observance, disliking ostentation and priding himself on sincerity of intention. He settled in Basra after the Prophet's death and played a role in early Islamic governance in that region. He is particularly known for a hadith he narrated warning against hypocrisy and showing off in religious actions: 'Whoever acts to be heard of, Allah will make him heard of (i.e., exposed), and whoever acts to be seen, Allah will make him seen.' This narration is considered one of the most important hadith on the topic of sincerity (ikhlas) in Islam. He also narrated hadiths on the obligation of carrying out legal punishments and other matters of Islamic law. He died in approximately 64 AH. His narrations appear in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and other major collections and are widely cited by scholars in discussions of sincere worship.
