النعمان بن بشير
Al-Nu'man ibn Bashir was one of the youngest companions of the Prophet ﷺ, born approximately 2 AH. His father Bashir ibn Sa'd was a prominent Ansar companion. Al-Nu'man was brought to the Prophet as an infant. His most famous contribution to Islamic jurisprudence is the narration he received directly from his father about a famous incident: Bashir wanted to give Nu'man a special gift that would favor him over his siblings. The Prophet said: 'Do you have other children?' Bashir said yes. The Prophet said: 'Have you given them all the same gift?' No. The Prophet said: 'Then do not ask me to witness this, for I do not witness injustice.' Then he added the principle: 'The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are ambiguous matters...' — one of the foundational hadiths of Islamic jurisprudence (Nawawi's Forty Hadith, no. 6). Al-Nu'man served as governor of Kufa and then Homs under the Umayyad caliphate. He was loyal to the Umayyads and was killed in 65 AH during the unrest following Yazid's death.
