تقي الدين السبكي
Shaykh al-Islam
Ali ibn Abd al-Kafi al-Subki (683–756 AH / 1284–1355 CE), known as Taqi al-Din al-Subki, was one of the most eminent scholars of 8th-century AH Damascus. He was a Shafi'i jurist, Ash'ari theologian, and hadith master who was appointed Shaykh al-Islam and chief judge of Damascus. He is remembered for his fierce intellectual battles with Ibn Taymiyya over theological and jurisprudential issues, particularly on questions of visitation to graves, divorce pronouncements, and other matters. His works include a major collection of fatwas and scholarly debates. His son Taj al-Din al-Subki continued his legacy. He represents the mainstream Shafi'i-Ash'ari scholarly tradition of his era.
