Urwa ibn al-Zubayr was a leading Tabi'i scholar of Medina, born around 23 AH. He was the son of the companion al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam (RA) — one of the ten companions given glad tidings of Paradise — and the nephew of Aisha (RA) through his mother Asma bint Abi Bakr. This family position made him one of the most important transmitters of Aisha's extensive narrations, which he learned directly from her. He is counted among the Seven Jurists of Medina (al-fuqaha al-sab'a), a recognized group of Tabi'i scholars whose scholarly consensus shaped the foundations of the Medinan legal tradition and influenced Imam Malik profoundly. He was known for his reliability, his vast knowledge of seerah and hadith, and his refusal to engage in political controversies. His students included al-Zuhri and Hisham ibn Urwa, his own son. He reportedly suffered the amputation of a leg and the death of a son on the same day, and bore both calamities with exemplary patience. He passed away around 93–94 AH.
