The Farewell Sermon — Khutbat al-Wada' — was delivered by the Prophet ﷺ on the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah 10 AH at the plain of Arafat, during the standing that is the central rite of Hajj. He stood on his she-camel al-Qaswa before an audience estimated between 100,000 and 124,000 — the largest gathering of his prophetic career — and addressed them in what would prove to be his final comprehensive statement to his community. The sermon's core themes were those the Prophet ﷺ regarded as most critical for the community's survival after his death. He declared the sanctity of Muslim life, property, and honor — 'as sacred as this day of yours in this month of yours in this city of yours' — invoking the triple sacred frame of Arafat, Dhul-Hijjah, and Mecca. He abolished all outstanding interest from the time of Jahiliyyah, beginning with his own family's claims. He commanded the men to treat women well and honor their rights — one of the most explicit statements on gender equity in the entire seerah. He declared the absolute equality of all people regardless of race or ethnicity: 'An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab over an Arab; a white man over a black man, nor a black man over a white man — except in piety.' He specified the two sources of guidance he was leaving: the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet. At the end, he asked the question that defined the purpose of the sermon: 'Have I conveyed?' The crowd answered yes. He said: 'O Allah, be witness' — three times. Then he instructed them to convey the message to those absent, 'for perhaps the one who is conveyed to will retain it better than the one who hears it today.' It was a commission, not merely a farewell. The Prophet ﷺ was transmitting his message through the crowd to every generation that would follow, and the transmission has never stopped. The sermon's closing question — 'Have I conveyed?' — and the crowd's answer — 'Yes' — followed by the Prophet's ﷺ 'O Allah, be witness' three times, is the seerah's most formal act of transmission: the Prophet ﷺ making the community's own testimony a witness before Allah to the completion of his mission.
