أَخْبَرَنَا سَهْلُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ : أَنَّ امْرَأَةً نَذَرَتْ أَنْ تَحُجَّ فَمَاتَتْ، فَجَاءَ أَخُوهَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَوْ كَانَ عَلَيْهَا دَيْنٌ أَكُنْتَ قَاضِيَهُ؟ ". قَالَ : نَعَمْ. قَالَ :" فَاقْضُوا اللَّهَ، فَاللَّهُ أَحَقُّ بِالْوَفَاءِ "

It was narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a woman vowed to perform Hajj but then died. Her brother came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him about it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: 'If she had a debt, would you pay it?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then fulfil the debt to Allah, for Allah is most deserving of fulfilment.'

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنِّي نَذَرْتُ نَذْرًا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ الْإِسْلَامُ؟ قَالَ :" فِ بِنَذْرِكَ "

It was narrated from Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: 'I said: O Messenger of Allah, I made a vow during the time of ignorance (jahiliyyah), and then Islam came.' He said: 'Fulfil your vow.'

أَخْبَرَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ عَوْنٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَحْرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الرُّعَيْنِيّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ ، قالَ : نَذَرَتْ أُخْتِي أَنْ تَحُجَّ لِلَّهِ مَاشِيَةً غَيْرَ مُخْتَمِرَةٍ، فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ :" مُرْ أُخْتَكَ فَلْتَخْتَمِرْ، وَلْتَرْكَبْ، وَلْتَصُمْ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ "

It was narrated from Uqbah ibn Amir al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) that his sister vowed to perform Hajj for Allah on foot without wearing a headscarf. He mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: 'Tell your sister to wear her headscarf, and to ride, and to fast three days.'

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ ، أَخْبَرَنِي قَتَادَةُ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ : أَنَّ أُخْتَ عُقْبَةَ نَذَرَتْ أَنْ تَمْشِيَ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ :" إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَغَنِيٌّ عَنْ نَذْرِ أُخْتِكَ، لِتَرْكَبْ وَلْتُهْدِ هَدْيًا "

It was narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the sister of Uqbah vowed to walk to the House (Kabah). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Allah is indeed in no need of your sister's vow. Let her ride and offer a sacrifice.'

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، عَنْ الْأَعْرَجِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ : أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَدْرَكَ شَيْخًا يَمْشِي بَيْنَ ابْنَيْهِ، فَقَالَ : " مَا شَأْنُ هَذَا الشَّيْخِ؟ "، فَقَالَ ابْنَاهُ : نَذَرَ أَنْ يَمْشِيَ، فَقَالَ :" ارْكَبْ، فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَنِيٌّ عَنْكَ وَعَنْ نَذْرِكَ "

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came across an old man being supported between his two sons. He said: 'What is the matter with this old man?' His two sons said: 'He vowed to walk.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Ride, for Allah is in no need of you and of your vow.'

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمُهَلَّبِ ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ :" لَا وَفَاءَ لِنَذْرٍ فِي مَعْصِيَةِ اللَّهِ، وَلَا فِيمَا لَا يَمْلِكُ ابْنُ آدَمَ "

It was narrated from Imran ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'There is no fulfilment of a vow in disobedience to Allah, nor in something that a person does not own.'

حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ ، عَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ الْأَيْلِيِّ ، عَنْ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، قَالَتْ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ :" مَنْ نَذَرَ أَنْ يَطِيعَ اللَّهَ، فَلْيُطِعْهُ، وَمَنْ نَذَرَ أَنْ يَعْصِيَ اللَّهَ، فَلَا يَعْصِهِ "

It was narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever vows to obey Allah, let him obey Allah. And whoever vows to disobey Allah, let him not disobey Him.'

حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مِنْهَالٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي بَقِيَّةَ الْمُعَلِّمِ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ : أَنَّ رَجُلًا قَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي نَذَرْتُ إِنْ فَتَحَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ فِي بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ؟ فَقَالَ :" صَلِّ هَاهُنَا ". فَأَعَادَ عَلَيْهِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " شَأْنُكَ إِذَنْ "

It was narrated from Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I vowed that if Allah granted you victory I would pray in Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem).' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Pray here.' He repeated it three times, and the Prophet ﷺ said: 'As you wish, then.'

أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَوْنٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ :" إِنَّ النَّذْرَ لَا يَرُدُّ شَيْئًا، وَإِنَّمَا يُسْتَخْرَجُ بِهِ مِنَ الشَّحِيحِ "

It was narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'A vow does not ward off anything; it only extracts from the miser.'

أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ : أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَدْرَكَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ وَهُوَ يَسِيرُ فِي رَكْبٍ، وَهُوَ يَحْلِفُ بِأَبِيه، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ :" إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ، فَمَنْ كَانَ حَالِفًا، فَلْيَحْلِفْ بِاللَّهِ، أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ "

It was narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came upon Umar ibn al-Khattab while he was riding in a caravan, swearing by his father. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Verily Allah forbids you to swear by your fathers. Whoever must take an oath, let him swear by Allah, or remain silent.'

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنِ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ :" مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ، فَقَدِ اسْتَثْنَى "

It was narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever takes an oath and then says: "If Allah wills," has made an exception (to the oath).'

أَخْبَرَنَا حَجَّاجٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ : أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ :" مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ، فَهُوَ بِالْخِيَارِ : إِنْ شَاءَ فَعَلَ، وَإِنْ شَاءَ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ "

It was narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever takes an oath and then says: "If Allah wills," he has the choice: if he wishes he may do it, and if he wishes he need not.'

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ ، حَدَّثَنِي يُونُسُ ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ : أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ : "لَا تُقْسِمْ ". قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ : الْحَدِيثُ فِيهِ طُولٌ

It was narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ said to Abu Bakr: 'Do not take an oath (on this matter).' — The hadith contains more detail.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو هُوَ : ابْنُ مُرَّةَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا يُقَالُ لَهُ : عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو زَمَنَ الْجَمَاجِمِ يُحَدِّثُ، قَالَ : سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ عَدِيَّ بْنَ حَاتِمٍ ، فَحَلَفَ أَنْ لَا يُعْطِيَهُ شَيْئًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ : لَوْلَا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، يَقُولُ :" مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ، فَرَأَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا، فَلْيَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ، وَلْيُكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ "

It was narrated from Adi ibn Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked him for something and he swore he would not give him anything. He then said: 'If I had not heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Whoever takes an oath and then sees something better than it, let him do what is better and make expiation for his oath," I would not have given him anything.'

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَمُرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ سَمُرَةَ،لَا تَسْأَلِ الْإِمَارَةَ فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ أُعْطِيتَهَا عَنْ مَسْأَلَةٍ، وُكِلْتَ إِلَيْهَا، وَإِنْ أُعْطِيتَهَا عِنْ غَيْرِ مَسْأَلَةٍ، أُعِنْتَ عَلَيْهَا. فَإِذَا حَلَفْتَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَيْتَ غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا، فَكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِكَ وَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ ". أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ ، سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ يُونُسَ ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ :. .. .. .. فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَ الْحَدِيثِ

It was narrated from Abd al-Rahman ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Abd al-Rahman ibn Samurah, do not seek authority, for if you are given it after asking for it you will be left to rely on yourself; but if you are given it without asking for it you will be helped in it. And if you take an oath and then see something better than it, make expiation for your oath and do what is better.'

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنِ الشَّرِيدِ ، قَالَ : أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقُلْتُ : إِنَّ عَلَى أُمِّي رَقَبَةً، وَإِنَّ عِنْدِي جَارِيَةً سَوْدَاءَ نُوبِيَّةً، أَفَتُجْزِئُ عَنْهَا؟. قَالَ : " ادْعُ بِهَا "، فَقَالَ :" أَتَشْهَدِينَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ؟ "، قَالَتْ : نَعَمْ. قَالَ : " أَعْتِقْهَا، فَإِنَّهَا مُؤْمِنَةٌ "

It was narrated from al-Sharid (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'My mother owes the freeing of a slave, and I have a black Nubian slave girl. Will she suffice?' He said: 'Call her.' He then asked her: 'Do you testify that there is no god but Allah?' She said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Free her, for she is a believer.'

أَخْبَرَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ :" يَمِينُكَ عَلَى مَا يُصَدَّ قُكَ بِهِ صَاحِبُكَ "

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Your oath is judged by what your companion (the one requesting it) believes you to mean.'

أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُوسَى ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : كَانَتْ يَمِينُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الَّتِي يَحْلِفُ بِهَا" لَا وَمُقَلِّبِ الْقُلُوبِ "

It was narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: 'The customary oath of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he used to swear by was: "No, by the Turner of hearts."'
