أَخْبَرَنَا يَعْلَى بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا ، عَنْ عَامِرٍ ، عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ حَاتِمٍ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ صَيْدِ الْكَلْبِ، فَقَالَ :" مَا أَمْسَكَ عَلَيْكَ كَلْبِكَ فَكُلْ، فَإِنَّ أَخْذَهُ ذَكَاتُهُ، وَإِنْ وَجَدْتَ مَعَهُ كَلْبًا فَخَشِيتَ أَنْ يَكُونَ قَدْ أَخَذَهُ مَعَهُ، وَقَدْ قَتَلَهُ، فَلَا تَأْكُلْهُ، فَإِنَّكَ إِنَّمَا ذَكَرْتَ اسْمَ اللَّهِ عَلَى كَلْبِكَ، وَلَمْ تَذْكُرْهُ عَلَى غَيْرِهِ ". أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا ، عَنْ عَامِرٍ ، عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ حَاتِمٍ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ صَيْدِ الْمِعْرَاضِ، فَذَكَرَ مِثْلَهُ

It was narrated from Adi ibn Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about hunting with a dog. He said: 'What your dog catches for you, eat it, for its catching is its slaughter. But if you find another dog with it and you fear that it had caught it together with your dog and killed it, do not eat it, for you mentioned the name of Allah over your dog but not over the other one.' He also asked about hunting with a mi'rad (a stick) and mentioned the same ruling.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ :" مَنْ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا إِلَّا كَلْبَ صَيْدٍ أَوْ مَاشِيَةٍ، نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطَانِ "

It was narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever keeps a dog other than a hunting dog or a livestock-guarding dog, two qirats are deducted from his deeds every day.'

حَدَّثَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ خُصَيْفَةَ ، عَنْ السَّائِبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ سُفْيَانَ بْنَ أَبِي زُهَيْرٍ يُحَدِّثُ نَاسًا مَعَهُ عِنْدَ بَاب الْمَسْجِدِ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ :" مَنْ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا لَا يُغْنِي عَنْهُ زَرْعًا وَلَا ضَرْعًا، نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ ". قَالُوا : أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قَالَ : إِي وَرَبِّ هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ

It was narrated from Sufyan ibn Abi Zuhayr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Whoever keeps a dog that is not used for farming or herding, one qirat is deducted from his deeds every day.' They said: Did you yourself hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: 'Yes, by the Lord of this mosque.'

أَخْبَرَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ أَبِي التَّيَّاحِ ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَأَمَرَ بِقَتْلِ الْكِلَابِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " مَا بَالِي وَلِلْكِلَابِ؟ "، ثُمَّ رَخَّصَ فِي كَلْبِ الرَّعْيِ وَكَلْبِ الصَّيْدِ

It was narrated from Abdullah ibn Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ commanded the killing of dogs, then said: 'What do I have to do with dogs?' Then he permitted the dog used for herding and the hunting dog.

أَخْبَرَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : " أَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَبِقَتْلِ الْكِلَابِ "

It was narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded the killing of dogs.'

أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَوْفٌ ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ :" لَوْلَا أَنَّ الْكِلَابَ أُمَّةٌ مِنْ الْأُمَمِ، لَأَمَرْتُ بِقَتْلِهَا كُلِّهَا، وَلَكِنْ اقْتُلُوا مِنْهَا كُلَّ أَسْوَدَ بَهِيمٍ ". قَالَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ : الْبَهِيمُ : الْأَسْوَدُ كُلُّهُ

It was narrated from Abdullah ibn Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Were it not that dogs are a nation among nations, I would command that they all be killed. But kill of them every pure black one.' Said ibn Amir said: 'Al-bahim means totally black.'

أَخْبَرَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي السَّفَرِ ، عَنْ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَدِيَّ بْنَ حَاتِمٍ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ الْمِعْرَاضِ، فَقَالَ :" إِذَا أَصَابَ بِحَدِّهِ، فَكُلْ، وَإِذَا أَصَابَ بِعَرْضِهِ فَقَتَلَ، فَإِنَّهُ وَقِيذٌ، فَلَا تَأْكُلْ "

It was narrated from Adi ibn Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked the Prophet ﷺ about hunting with a mi'rad (a flat-headed arrow). He said: 'If it strikes with its sharp edge, eat it. But if it strikes with its flat side and kills it, then it is waqidh (killed by blunt force), so do not eat it.'

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِي يَعْفُورٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى ، قَالَ : " غَزَوْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَبْعَ غَزَوَاتٍنَأْكُلُ الْجَرَادَ "

It was narrated from Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: 'We went on seven military campaigns with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ eating locusts.'

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ ، قِرَاءَةً، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ مِنْ آلِ الْأَزْرَقِ، أَنَّ الْمُغِيرَةَ بْنَ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ وَهُوَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي عَبْدِ الدَّارِ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ، سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ، يَقُولُ : سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّا نَرْكَبُ الْبَحْرَ وَنَحْمِلُ مَعَنَا الْقَلِيلَ مِنْ الْمَاءِ، فَإِنْ تَوَضَّأْنَا بِهِ، عَطِشْنَا، أَفَنَتَوَضَّأُ مِنْ مَاءِ الْبَحْرِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ :" هُوَ الطَّهُورُ مَاؤُهُ، الْحِلُّ مَيْتَتُهُ "

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked the Prophet ﷺ and said: We sail the sea and carry little water with us; if we use it for ablution we become thirsty — may we perform ablution with seawater? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'It is purifying, its water, and lawful, its dead.'

أَخْبَرَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ عَدِيٍّ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو يَعْنِي : ابْنَ دِينَارٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : " بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي ثَلَاثِ مِئَةٍ،فَأَصَابَنَا جُوعٌ حَتَّى أَتَيْنَا الْبَحْرَ وَقَدْ قَذَفَ دَابَّةً، فَأَكَلْنَا مِنْهَا حَتَّى ثَابَتْ أَجْسَامُنَا، فَأَخَذَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ ضِلْعًا مِنْ أَضْلَاعِهَا فَوَضَعَهُ، ثُمَّ حَمَلَ أَطْوَلَ رَجُلٍ فِي الْجَيْشِ عَلَى أَعْظَمِ بَعِيرٍ فِي الْجَيْشِ فَمَرَّ تَحْتَهُ، هَذَا مَعْنَاهُ "

It was narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us out with three hundred men. We were struck by hunger until we came to the sea and it had cast up a creature. We ate from it until our bodies recovered. Abu Ubayda took one of its ribs and set it up, then loaded the tallest man in the army on the largest camel in the army and they passed under it — this is the meaning of it.'

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، قَالَ : هِشَامُ بْنُ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ أَخْبَرَنِي، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ، يَقُولُ :أَنْفَجْنَا أَرْنَبًا وَنَحْنُ بِمَرِّ الظَّهْرَانِ ، فَسَعَى الْقَوْمُ فَلَغِبُوا، فَأَخَذْتُهَا وَجِئْتُ بِهَا إِلَى أَبِي طَلْحَةَ، فَذَبَحَهَا وَبَعَثَ بِوَرِكَيْهَا أَوْ فَخِذَيْهَا، شَكَّ شُعْبَةُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " فَقَبِلَهَا "

It was narrated from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We startled a hare while we were at Marr al-Zahran. The people ran after it and became tired, so I caught it and brought it to Abu Talha. He slaughtered it and sent its haunches — or its thighs (Shu'bah was uncertain) — to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who accepted them.

أَخْبَرَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ أَبِي هِنْدٍ ، عَنْ عَامِرٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ صَفْوَانَ ، أَنَّهُ مَرَّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِأَرْنَبَيْنِ مُعَلِّقُهُمَا، فَقَالَ : " يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنِّيدَخَلْتُ غَنَمَ أَهْلِي فَاصْطَدْتُ هَذَيْنِ الْأَرْنَبَيْنِ، فَلَمْ أَجِدْ حَدِيدَةً أُذَكِّيهِمَا بِهَا، فَذَكَّيْتُهُمَا بِمَرْوَةٍ، أَفَآكُلُ؟ قَالَ : " نَعَمْ "

It was narrated from Muhammad ibn Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) that he passed by the Prophet ﷺ carrying two rabbits hanging, and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I entered my family's flock and hunted these two rabbits, but I could not find an iron blade to slaughter them, so I slaughtered them with a flint stone. May I eat them?' He said: 'Yes.'

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : سُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ الضَّبِّ، فَقَالَ :" لَسْتُ بِآكِلِهِ وَلَا مُحَرِّمِهِ "

It was narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ was asked about the dhabb (desert monitor lizard). He said: 'I do not eat it and I do not declare it forbidden.'

أَخْبَرَنَا سَهْلُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَكَمُ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ زَيْدَ بْنَ وَهْبٍ يُحَدِّثُ، عَنْ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ ، عَنْ ثَابِتِ بْنِ وَدِيعَةَ ، قَالَ : أُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِضَبٍّ، فَقَالَ :" أُمَّةٌ مُسِخَتْ وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ "

It was narrated from Thabit ibn Wadiah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a dhabb (desert monitor lizard) was brought to the Prophet ﷺ and he said: 'A nation that was transformed — and Allah knows best.'

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ ، حَدَّثَنِي يُونُسُ ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو أُمَامَةَ بْنُ سَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَبَّاسٍ أَخْبَرَهُ، أَنَّ خَالِدَ بْنَ الْوَلِيدِ الَّذِي يُقَالُ لَهُ سَيْفُ اللَّهِ أَخْبَرَهُ، أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى مَيْمُونَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهِيَ خَالَتُهُ وَخَالَةُ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، فَوَجَدَ عِنْدَهَا ضَبًّا مَحْنُوذًا قَدِمَتْ بِهِ أُخْتُهَا حُفَيْدَةُ بِنْتُ الْحَارِثِ مِنْ نَجْدٍ ، فَقَدَّمَتْ الضَّبَّ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَكَانَ قَلَّمَا يُقَدِّمُ يَدَهُ لِطَعَامٍ حَتَّى يُحَدَّثَ بِهِ وَيُسَمَّى لَهُ، فَأَهْوَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَدَهُ إِلَى الضَّبِّ، فَقَالَتْ امْرَأَةٌ مِنْ نِسْوَةِ الْحُضُورِ : أَخْبِرْنَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا قَدَّمْتُنَّ لَهُ. قُلْنَ : هَذَا الضَّبُّ، فَرَفَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَدَهُ، فَقَالَ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ :أَتُحَرِّمُ الضَّبَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ : " لَا، وَلَكِنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ بِأَرْضِ قَوْمِي، فَأَجِدُنِي أَعَافُهُ ". قَالَ خَالِدٌ : فَاجْتَرَرْتُهُ فَأَكَلْتُهُ، وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَنْظُرُ، فَلَمْ يَنْهَنِي

It was narrated from Khalid ibn al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him), known as the Sword of Allah, that he entered with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ upon Maymunah, wife of the Prophet ﷺ, who was his aunt and the aunt of Ibn Abbas. He found with her a roasted dhabb that her sister Hufaydah bint al-Harith had brought from Najd. She presented the dhabb to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he rarely extended his hand to food before being told what it was and it being named for him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stretched out his hand toward the dhabb, but a woman from among those present said: 'Inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what you have presented to him.' They said: 'This is a dhabb.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ withdrew his hand. Khalid ibn al-Walid said: 'Do you forbid the dhabb, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'No, but it was not in the land of my people, so I find myself averse to it.' Khalid said: I then pulled it toward me and ate it, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ watched, and he did not forbid me.

أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَجِيدِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ أَسْلَمَ ، قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ : أَحْسَبُهُ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ ، قَالَ : قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ ، وَالنَّاسُ يَجُبُّونَ أَسْنِمَةَ الْإِبِلِ وَأَلْيَاتِ الْغَنَمِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ :" مَا قُطِعَ مِنْ بَهِيمَةٍ وَهِيَ حَيَّةٌ، فَهُوَ مَيْتَةٌ "

It was narrated from Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah, the people were cutting off the humps of camels and the fat tails of sheep. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whatever is cut from a living animal is dead meat (maytah).'
