English Translation
Husayn ibn Hasan al-Ashqar narrated to us, Abu Kudaynah narrated to us, from 'Ata, from Abu al-Duha, from Ibn 'Abbas رضي الله عنهما who said: A Jew passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was sitting with his Companions and they said: 'Ask him about the soul.' Some of them said: 'Do not ask him, lest he give an answer you dislike.' But they asked him, and he stood up and remained standing for a while, receiving revelation. Then the verse was revealed: 'And they ask you about the soul. Say: The soul is from the affair of my Lord, and you have not been given of knowledge except a little.' [17:85]
