English Translation
'Affan narrated to us, Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, from Simak, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas رضي الله عنهما who said: A sheep belonging to Sawdah bint Zam'ah died. She said: 'O Messenger of Allah, so-and-so has died,' meaning the sheep. He said: 'Why did you not take its skin?' She said: 'Should we take the skin of a dead animal?' He said: 'Indeed, Allah عز وجل said: "Say: I do not find within that which was revealed to me anything forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood poured forth or the flesh of swine" [6:145]. You are not eating it. Rather you are tanning it and benefiting from it.' So she sent for it, skinned it, tanned it, and made a water-skin from it that lasted until it wore out.
