English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Sa'id ibn Jubayr — that he said: ''Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) used to grant admission to the people of Badr [to his gatherings] and would admit me along with them. Some of them said: "He admits this young man with us, yet among our own sons are those of the same age." 'Umar said: "He is who you know." One day he admitted them and admitted me with them. He asked them about this surah: "When the victory of Allah comes and the opening" [110]. They said: "[Allah] commanded His Prophet (ﷺ) that when victory came, he should seek forgiveness and repent." Then 'Umar asked me: "What do you say, O Ibn 'Abbas?" I said: "It is not that — rather, Allah informed His Prophet (ﷺ) of the approach of his appointed time. He said: 'When the victory of Allah comes and the opening' — meaning the conquest of Makkah — 'and you see the people entering the religion of Allah in multitudes' — that is the sign of your death. 'So exalt your Lord with His praise and ask His forgiveness. Indeed, He is ever accepting of repentance.'" 'Umar then said to them: "How can you blame me for what you now see?"'
