حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْعَطَّارُ حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ وَعَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ وَفْدَ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ أَتَوْا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِيهِمْ الْأَشَجُّ أَخُو بَنِي عَصَرٍ فَقَالُوا يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ إِنَّا حَيٌّ مِنْ رَبِيعَةَ وَإِنَّ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكَ كُفَّارَ مُضَرَ وَإِنَّا لَا نَصِلُ إِلَيْكَ إِلَّا فِي الشَّهْرِ الْحَرَامِ فَمُرْنَا بِأَمْرٍ إِذَا عَمِلْنَا بِهِ دَخَلْنَا الْجَنَّةَ وَنَدْعُو بِهِ مَنْ وَرَاءَنَا فَأَمَرَهُمْ بِأَرْبَعٍ وَنَهَاهُمْ عَنْ أَرْبَعٍ أَمَرَهُمْ أَ
نْ يَعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَلَا يُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا وَأَنْ يَصُومُوا رَمَضَانَ وَأَنْ يَحُجُّوا الْبَيْتَ وَأَنْ يُعْطُوا الْخُمُسَ مِنْ الْمَغَانِمِ وَنَهَاهُمْ عَنْ أَرْبَعٍ عَنْ الشُّرْبِ فِي الْحَنْتَمِ وَالدُّبَّاءِ وَالنَّقِيرِ وَالْمُزَفَّتِ فَقَالُوا فَفِيمَ نَشْرَبُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ عَلَيْكُمْ بِأَسْقِيَةِ الْأَدَمِ الَّتِي يُلَاثُ عَلَى أَفْوَاهِهَا حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ قَتَادَةَ يَذْكُرُ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَعِكْرِمَةَ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ وَفْدَ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ أَتَوْا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِيهِمْ الْأَشَجُّ أَخُو بَنِي عَصَرٍ فَذَكَرَ مَعْنَاهُ

English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab and 'Ikrimah — that the delegation of 'Abd al-Qays came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, among them al-Ashajj, the brother of Banu 'Asar. They said: 'O Prophet of Allah, we are a tribe from Rabi'ah. Between us and you are the disbelievers of Mudar, and we can only reach you during the sacred month. Command us with something that, if we act upon it, we will enter Paradise, and by which we may call those behind us.' He commanded them with four things and forbade them from four: he commanded them to worship Allah alone without associating anything with Him, to fast Ramadan, to perform Hajj to the House, and to give a fifth [khums] of war spoils. He forbade them from drinking in al-hantam [green clay jars], al-dubba' [dried gourd vessels], al-naqir [hollowed palm-trunk containers], and al-muzaffat [pitch-coated vessels]. They said: 'In what shall we drink, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Use leather water-skins whose mouths are tied up.' [A second chain via 'Affan and Aban from Qatadah — similar meaning.]
