English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Rawh, from Hammad, from 'Abdullah ibn 'Uthman ibn Khuthaym, from Abi al-Tufayl — that he said: 'I said to Ibn 'Abbas: Your people claim that the Prophet ﷺ performed ramal [brisk walking] around the House, and that this is a sunnah. He said: They are right and wrong. I said: How are they right and wrong? He said: They are right that he performed ramal around the House. They are wrong that it is a sunnah. Indeed, Quraysh said during the time of al-Hudaybiyya: Leave Muhammad and his Companions — they will die the death of the naghafs [wood grubs]. When they made a peace treaty with the Prophet ﷺ — that they would come the following year and stay in Makkah for three days — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came the following year while the polytheists were on the side of Qu'ayqa'an. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Perform ramal around the House for three circuits. And it is not a permanent sunnah.' [A second chain via Yunus and Surayj from Hammad from Abi 'Asim al-Ghanawi from Abi al-Tufayl — he mentioned the hadith.]
