English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Yahya ibn Ishaq, from Hammad ibn Salama, from 'Asim ibn Bahdala, from Abi Wa'il — that 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud said: 'A man who had done no deed of good whatsoever except tawhid [pure monotheism] — when death approached him he said to his family: When I die, take me and burn me until you leave me as charcoal, then grind me, then scatter me in the sea on a windy day. They did so. Then he was in the grasp of Allah (عز وجل). Allah said to him: What made you do what you did? He said: Fear of You. So Allah forgave him.' Yahya said: Hammad also narrated it from Thabit, from Abu Rafi', from Abu Hurayra (رضي الله عنه), from the Prophet ﷺ, similarly.
