English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah — that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'My Lord (عز وجل) came to me tonight in the most beautiful form' — [the narrator] said: 'I think he meant: in a dream' — 'and He said: O Muhammad, do you know what the highest assembly [al-mala' al-a'la] is arguing about? I said: No. He placed His hand between my shoulders until I felt its coolness between my chest — or he said: my upper chest — and I came to know what is in the heavens and what is in the earth. Then He said: O Muhammad, do you know what the highest assembly is arguing about? I said: Yes — they are arguing about the expiations [kaffaraat] and the ranks [darajaat]. He said: And what are the expiations and ranks? He said: Remaining long in the mosques, walking on foot to the congregational prayers, and completing wudu during times of hardship. Whoever does these lives well and dies well, and his sins are [forgiven as if] from the day his mother gave birth to him. And say, O Muhammad, when you pray: O Allah, I ask You for good deeds, the abandonment of evil deeds, and the love of the poor; and if You intend a trial [fitna] for Your servants, then take me to You without being tried. He said: And the ranks are: offering food, spreading the salam, and praying at night while people sleep.'
