English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Ibn Khuthaym, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr — that the notables of Quraysh gathered in al-Hijr and made a pact by al-Lat, al-'Uzza, and Manat — the third one — that if they saw Muhammad they would rise against him as one man and not leave him until they killed him. Fatimah came weeping until she entered upon her father and said: 'These are the notables of your people in al-Hijr — they have pledged that if they see you, they will rise and kill you. There is not a man among them who has not designated his share of your blood.' He said: 'O my daughter, bring me water for wudu.' He performed wudu, then entered the mosque and walked up to them. When they saw him, they said: 'There he is.' But they lowered their eyes and sat frozen in their seats — they did not raise their eyes toward him and not one man stood up. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came until he stood over their heads, then took a handful of dust and scattered it at them, saying: 'May faces be disfigured [sha'hat al-wujuh]!' Not a single pebble reached a man among them except that he was later killed as a disbeliever at [the Battle of] Badr.
