Hadith #257

English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Rawh, from Hammad ibn Salama, from 'Asim ibn Bahdala, from Zirr ibn Hubaysh — that he said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me Surah al-Ahqaf [46] and taught it to another man as well. But [the other man] recited a verse of it differently from me. I said: Who taught you? He said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me. I said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me such-and-such. So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while another man was with him. I said: O Messenger of Allah, did you not teach me such-and-such? He said: Yes. The other said: Did you not teach me such-and-such? He said: Yes. The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed. The man present said: Let each of you recite as he heard — for indeed those who came before you were destroyed — or: caused to perish — by disagreement. I do not know whether the Prophet ﷺ commanded him to say that, or whether it was something he said of his own accord.'
