English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via 'Affan, from Hammad, from 'Asim ibn Bahdala, from Zirr ibn Hubaysh — that he said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the mosque while between Abu Bakr and 'Umar. Ibn Mas'ud was praying, reciting Surah al-Nisa'. When he reached a hundred [verses], Ibn Mas'ud began to supplicate while standing in prayer. the Prophet ﷺ said: "Ask and you will be given! Ask and you will be given!" Then he said: "Whoever wishes to recite the Quran fresh as it was revealed, let him recite it according to the recitation of Ibn Umm 'Abd [Ibn Mas'ud]." In the morning Abu Bakr came to give him the good news and said: "What did you ask of Allah last night?" He said: "I said: O Allah, I ask You for faith that does not waver, bliss that does not end, and the companionship of Muhammad (ﷺ) in the highest levels of the eternal Paradise." Then 'Umar came and was told that Abu Bakr had preceded him. He said: "May Allah have mercy on Abu Bakr — never have I preceded him to any good except that he has preceded me to it."' — [Second chain] via Mu'awiya, from Za'ida, from 'Asim ibn Abi al-Najud, from Zirr, from 'Abdullah — that the Prophet ﷺ came to him between Abu Bakr and 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — and he mentioned the like.
