English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Isma'il, from Dawud and Ibn Abi Za'ida (same meaning), from al-Sha'bi, from 'Alqama — that he said: 'I asked Ibn Mas'ud: Did any of you accompany the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Night of the Jinn? He said: None of us accompanied him. But we missed him one night and said: Was he kidnapped? Was he taken? What happened? We spent the worst night that any people ever spent. Then as dawn was breaking — or he said: in the pre-dawn hours — there he was, coming from the direction of Hira'. We said: O Messenger of Allah — and they mentioned what they had been anxious about. He said: Indeed a caller from the jinn came to me and I went to them and recited [the Quran] to them. Then he took us along and showed us their traces and the traces of their fires.' Al-Sha'bi said: They asked him for provisions. Ibn Abi Za'ida said: 'Amir [al-Sha'bi] said: They asked him that night for provisions — they were from the jinn of the [Arabian] Peninsula. He said: Every bone over which the name of Allah has been mentioned will come into your hands with the most meat on it, and every piece of dung [ba'ra] or animal dropping is fodder for your animals. So do not use them for cleaning [after relieving yourselves], for they are the provisions of your brothers from the jinn.'
