English Translation

It was narrated — via Yahya ibn Sa'id, from 'Abd al-Malik ibn Abi Sulayman, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr — that he said: 'During the governance of Ibn al-Zubayr, I was asked whether a couple who had performed li'an [mutual imprecatory oaths] should be separated — and I did not know what to say. I went from my place to Ibn 'Umar's house and said: "O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, should the li'an couple be separated?" He said: "Glory be to Allah [subhan Allah]! The first person who asked about that was so-and-so, son of so-and-so. He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what should a man do if he sees his wife committing an indecency [fahisha]? If he speaks, he will speak of a great matter; if he is silent, he remains silent about the same.' [the Prophet ﷺ] was quiet and gave no answer. Later, the man came again and said: 'The matter I asked you about — I have myself been tested with it.' Allah (عز وجل) then revealed these verses in Surah al-Nur: 'As for those who accuse their wives...' up to: '...that the wrath of Allah will be upon her if he was of the truthful' [24:6-9]. He began with the man — admonishing him, reminding him [of Allah's warning], and telling him that the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter. The man said: 'By the One who sent you with the truth, I have not lied to you.' He then turned to the woman — admonishing her and reminding her that the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter. The woman said: 'By the One who sent you with the truth, he is lying.' He then began with the man, who testified four times by Allah that he was among the truthful, and a fifth time invoking the curse of Allah upon himself if he was among the liars. He then turned to the woman, who testified four times by Allah that he [the man] was among the liars, and a fifth time invoking the wrath of Allah upon herself if he was among the truthful. He then separated them."'
