English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Muhammad ibn Ja'far, from Shu'ba, from Anas ibn Sirin — that he said: 'I asked Ibn 'Umar: "What should I recite in the two rak'as before Subh?" Ibn 'Umar said: "the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray at night two by two, and make Witr with one rak'a at the end of the night." Anas said: I said: "I am only asking you what to recite in the two rak'as before Subh." He said: "Well then! What a big question! I am only narrating — or: I am only relating the hadith for you: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray at night two rak'as at a time, then make Witr with one rak'a at the end of the night. Then he would rise [for the Fajr sunnah] as if the adhan or the iqama were in his ears."'
