Hadith #62
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو أَنَّ الْيَهُودَ كَانُوا يَقُولُونَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَامٌ عَلَيْكَ ثُمَّ يَقُولُونَ فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ { لَوْلَا يُعَذِّبُنَا اللَّهُ بِمَا نَقُولُ } فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ { وَإِذَا جَاءُوكَ حَيَّوْكَ بِمَا لَمْ يُحَيِّكَ بِهِ اللَّهُ } إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةَ
English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via 'Abd al-Samad, from Hammad, from 'Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib, from his father — that he said: 'The Jews used to say to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "Sam [death/poison] be upon you" — then they would say to themselves: {Why does Allah not punish us for what we say?} [58:8]. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Why do they not [receive punishment]? Indeed what they deserve is near — when a man from among them dies or his face is disfigured [by disease]."\''
