English Translation

Hasan ibn Musa narrated to us, Shayban narrated to us, from Qatadah, from 'Uqbah ibn 'Abd al-Ghafir, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'A man among those before you killed ninety-nine people, then he asked about the most knowledgeable person on earth and was directed to a monk. He went to him and said: I have killed ninety-nine people. Can I repent? He said: No. So he killed him, completing one hundred. Then he asked about the most knowledgeable person and was directed to a scholar. He said: I have killed one hundred people. Can I repent? He said: Yes, and what stands between you and repentance? Go to such-and-such land, for in it are people who worship Allah. Worship Allah with them and do not return to your land, for it is a land of evil. So he set out, and when he was halfway, death came to him. The angels of mercy and the angels of punishment disputed over him. The angels of mercy said: He came turning to Allah with his heart repentant. The angels of punishment said: He never did any good. Then an angel came in human form and they made him an arbiter. He said: Measure the distance between the two lands. Whichever he is closer to, he belongs to that land. They measured and found him closer to the land he was heading to, so the angels of mercy took him.'
