حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النَّضْرِ حَدَّثَنَا الْمُبَارَكُ حَدَّثَنِي حُمَيْدٌ الطَّوِيلُ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِك
ٍ قَالَ لَمَّا تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ كَانَ رَجُلٌ يَلْحَدُ وَآخَرُ يَضْرَحُ فَقَالُوا نَسْتَخِيرُ رَبَّنَا فَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهِمَا فَأَيُّهُمَا سَبَقَ تَرَكْنَاهُ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِمَا فَسَبَقَ صَاحِبُ اللَّحْدِ فَأَلْحَدُوا لَهُ
English Translation
Abu al-Nadr narrated to us: al-Mubarak narrated to us: Humayd al-Tawil narrated to me from Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) who said: 'When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, there was a man who dug the lahd (niche) type of grave and another who dug the sharh (trench) type. They said: Let us seek guidance from our Lord. So they sent for both of them, and whichever one arrived first, they would use his method. The one who dug the lahd arrived first, so they made a lahd for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.'
