English Translation
Mu'awiyah ibn Amr narrated to us, Abu Ishaq narrated to us, from al-Awza'i, Abu Ammar narrated to me, a neighbor of Jabir ibn Abdullah narrated to me who said: I came back from a journey and Jabir ibn Abdullah came to greet me. I began telling him about the divisions among the people and what they were innovating. Jabir began to weep, then he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Indeed the people will enter Islam, then the Quran will be recited and taught [properly]. Then they will study it and learn it, then a man will say: I have recited the Quran and studied it, yet I do not see that they [the scholars] have anything over me.' Then he becomes eager [for leadership] and separates from them. And these are the ones from whom the sparks [of fitna] come. Just as the sparks come from that tree.' Then he said: 'If I were to live long enough, I would fight them as the people of Badr were fought.'
