English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, Sa'id — meaning Ibn Abi 'Arubah — narrated to us, from Qatadah, from 'Ata', from Tariq ibn Muraqqa', from Safwan ibn Umayyah that a man stole his cloak. He brought him to the Prophet ﷺ, who ordered his hand to be cut off. Safwan said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I did not intend this. It is his as a charity from me.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Why did you not do this before you brought him to me?'
