English Translation

Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us, Hishām al-Dastuwāʾī narrated to us, from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from Hilāl ibn Abī Maymūnah, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from Rifāʿah al-Juhanī who said: We were traveling with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ until we were at al-Kadīd — or he said Qudayd. Men among us began asking permission to go to their families, and he would permit them. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ stood, praised Allāh and extolled Him, then said: 'What is wrong with men that the side of the tree facing the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ is more hateful to them than the other side?' At that, we saw no one among the people except weeping. A man said: 'Whoever asks your permission after this is truly foolish.' the Prophet ﷺ praised Allāh and then said: 'I testify before Allāh — no servant who testifies sincerely from his heart that there is no god but Allāh and that I am the Messenger of Allāh, and then acts rightly, will die except that he shall be admitted to Paradise.' He said: 'My Lord عز وجل has promised me that seventy thousand of my ummah will enter without reckoning or punishment. I hope they will not enter it until you and whoever is righteous among your fathers, wives, and offspring have settled in dwellings in Paradise.' He also said: 'When half the night passes — or he said two-thirds of the night — Allāh عز وجل descends to the lowest heaven and says: "I do not ask anyone besides Myself about My servants. Who is seeking My forgiveness so that I may forgive him? Who is calling upon Me so that I may answer him? Who is asking Me so that I may give him?" — until the dawn breaks.' Abū al-Mughīrah narrated to us, al-Awzāʿī narrated to us, Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr narrated to us, from Hilāl ibn Abī Maymūnah, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from Rifāʿah ibn ʿArābah al-Juhanī who said: We departed with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ from Makkah, and people began asking his permission — and he mentioned the hadith. He said: Abū Bakr said: 'Whoever asks your permission after this is foolish in my view.' Then the Prophet ﷺ praised Allāh and spoke well, then said: 'I testify before Allāh' — and when he swore he would say: 'By the One in Whose hand is Muḥammad's soul' — 'no servant who believes in Allāh and the Last Day and then acts rightly will die except that he shall enter Paradise' — and he mentioned the hadith. Ḥasan ibn Mūsā narrated to us, Shaybān narrated to us, from Yaḥyā — meaning Ibn Abī Kathīr — Hilāl ibn Abī Maymūnah, a man from Madinah, narrated to me, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from Rifāʿah ibn ʿArābah al-Juhanī who said: We were traveling with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ until we were at al-Kadīd — or he said at ʿArafah — and he mentioned the hadith.
