Hadith #188

English Translation

Abū ʿĀmir narrated to us, Zuhayr ibn Muḥammad narrated to us, from Yazīd ibn Yazīd — meaning Ibn Jābir — from Khālid ibn al-Lajlāj, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿĀʾish, from some of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ came out to them one morning in good spirits, his face radiant — or glowing. We said: O Messenger of Allāh, we see you in good spirits with a radiant — or glowing — face. He said: And what would prevent that? My Lord عز وجل came to me last night in the most beautiful form and said: O Muḥammad! I said: At Your service, my Lord, and at Your pleasure. He said: About what does the Exalted Assembly (al-Malaʾ al-Aʿlā) dispute? I said: I do not know, O my Lord. He said that two or three times. Then He placed His palms between my shoulders, and I felt their coolness between my chest, until everything in the heavens and the earth became clear to me. Then he recited this verse: "And thus did We show Ibrāhīm the dominion of the heavens and the earth, that he might be among those who have certainty" (6:75). Then He said: O Muḥammad, about what does the Exalted Assembly dispute? I said: About the expiations (kaffārāt). He said: And what are the expiations? I said: Walking on foot to the congregational prayers, sitting in the mosque between prayers, and performing wuḍūʾ thoroughly despite hardship. He said: Whoever does that will live in goodness and die in goodness, and will be cleansed of his sins as on the day his mother bore him. And among the ranks (darajāt) are: good speech, spreading the salām, feeding food, and praying at night while the people sleep. He said: O Muḥammad, when you pray say: O Allāh, I ask You for good things and the abandonment of evil, and love of the poor, and that You turn to me in forgiveness; and when You intend a tribulation for the people, take me to You without being tried.
