English Translation

Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, from Misʿar, who said: ʿAmr ibn Murrah narrated to me, from a man, from Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, from his father, who said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say in the voluntary prayer: 'Allāhu akbar kabīrā (Allāh is the Greatest, truly Great)' — three times, 'wal-ḥamdu lillāhi kathīrā (and all praise is due to Allāh abundantly)' — three times, 'wa subḥān Allāhi bukratan wa aṣīlā (and glory be to Allāh morning and evening)' — three times. 'O Allāh, I seek refuge in You from the accursed Shayṭān, from his hamz, his nafth, and his nafkh.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allāh, what are his hamz, nafth, and nafkh?' He said: 'As for his hamz, it is the seizure (like madness) that afflicts the son of Ādam. As for his nafkh, it is arrogance. And his nafth is (evil) poetry.'
