English Translation

Al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us: Ibn Jābir narrated to us, from al-Qāsim Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir, he said: While I was leading the mount of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ through a mountain pass, he said to me: 'O ʿUqbah, will you not ride?' I felt too much reverence for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to ride his mount. Then he said: 'O ʿUqayb, will you not ride?' I feared it would be disobedience [to refuse]. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dismounted and I rode for a while, then he rode. Then he said: 'O ʿUqayb, shall I not teach you two sūrahs from the best two sūrahs people have recited?' I said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' So he taught me Qul Aʿūdhu bi-Rabb al-Falaq and Qul Aʿūdhu bi-Rabb al-Nās. Then the iqāmah was called and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went forward and recited them [in prayer]. Then he passed by me and said: 'How did you find them, O ʿUqayb? Recite them every time you sleep and every time you rise.' Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: He is ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir ibn ʿĀbis, and he said: Ibn ʿAbs al-Juhanī.
