English Translation

Yazīd narrated to us, Ismāʿīl narrated to us — meaning Ibn Abī Khālid — from Qays, from al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah رضي الله عنه who said: I proposed to a woman during the time of the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Have you looked at her?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'Then look at her, for it is more likely to create affection between you.' So I went to a woman from the Anṣār and proposed to her through her parents, and I told them what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said. It was as if they disliked that. The woman heard this from her chamber and said: 'If the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has ordered you to look, then look. Otherwise, I adjure you' — as if she considered it a grave matter. He said: So I looked at her and married her, and he mentioned their compatibility.
