English Translation

ʿAlī ibn Baḥr narrated to us, ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus narrated to us, Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq narrated to us, Yazīd ibn Muḥammad ibn Khuthaym al-Muḥāribī narrated to me, from Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Quraẓī, from Muḥammad ibn Khuthaym Abū Yazīd, from ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir رضي الله عنه who said: ʿAlī and I were companions in the expedition of Dhāt al-ʿUshayrah. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stopped there and stayed, we saw men from Banū Mudlij working on a spring of theirs among palm trees. ʿAlī said to me: 'O Abū al-Yaqẓān, shall we go see how they work?' We went to them and watched their work for a while, then sleep overcame us. ʿAlī and I went and lay down in a row of palm trees in fine dust. We slept, and by Allah, nothing woke us except the Messenger of Allah ﷺ nudging us with his foot. We had become covered in that dust. That day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to ʿAlī: 'O Abū Turāb' — because of the dust that was on him. He said: 'Shall I not tell you about the two most wretched of people?' We said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Uḥaymir of Thamūd who hamstrung the she-camel, and the one who strikes you, O ʿAlī, on this' — meaning his head — 'until this is soaked from it' — meaning his beard. Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik narrated to us, Muḥammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from Yazīd ibn Muḥammad ibn Khuthaym, from Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Quraẓī, Muḥammad ibn Khuthaym Abū Yazīd narrated to me, from ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir who said: ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib رضي الله عنه and I were companions in the expedition of al-ʿUshayrah. We passed by men from Banū Mudlij working on their palm trees — and he mentioned the same meaning as the hadith of ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus.
