English Translation

Yaʿqūb narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Ṣāliḥ, who said: Ibn Shihāb said: ʿUbaydullāh ibn ʿAbdullāh narrated to me, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir رضي الله عنه — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stopped at Ulāt al-Jaysh, and with him was ʿĀʾishah his wife. Her necklace of Ẓafār onyx broke. The people were delayed searching for her necklace until dawn, and the people had no water. So Allah عز وجل revealed to His Messenger ﷺ the concession of purifying with clean earth. The Muslims stood with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and struck the ground with their hands, then raised their hands without grasping any dirt. They wiped their faces and their arms up to the shoulders, and from the palms of their hands to the armpits. Let not people be deceived by this. It reached us that Abū Bakr said to ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنهما: 'By Allah, I didn't know — you are truly blessed.'
