English Translation

Abū Saʿīd narrated to us: Zāʾidah narrated to us: Manṣūr narrated to us, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah and al-Aswad who said: Some people came to ʿAbdullāh — meaning Ibn Masʿūd — and said: What do you say about a man who married a woman? — and he mentioned the hadith. A man from Ashjaʿ — Manṣūr said: I think it was Salamah ibn Yazīd — said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ judged likewise in a similar case: a man from among us married a woman from Banū Ruʾās called Birwaʿ bint Wāshiq. He went on a journey and fell into a well where he suffocated and died, without having set a dowry for her. They came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: Like the dowry of her peers — no less and no excess — and she inherits, and she must observe the waiting period.'
