حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَوْدِيُّ عَن حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْحِمْيَرِيِّ أَنَّ رَجُلًا يُقَالُ لَهُ حَمَمَةُ كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَرَجَ إِلَى أَصْبَهَانَ غَازِيًا فِي خِلَافَةِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ حَمَمَةَ يَزْعُمُ أَنَّهُ يُحِبُّ لِق
َاءَكَ فَإِنْ كَانَ حَمَمَةُ صَادِقًا فَاعْزِمْ لَهُ صِدْقَهُ وَإِنْ كَانَ كَاذِبًا فَاعْزِمْ عَلَيْهِ وَإِنْ كَرِهَ اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَرُدَّ حَمَمَةَ مِنْ سَفَرِهِ هَذَا قَالَ فَأَخَذَهُ الْمَوْتُ وَقَالَ عَفَّانُ مَرَّةً الْبَطْنُ فَمَاتَ بأَصْبَهَانَ قَالَ فَقَامَ أَبُو مُوسَى فَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا وَاللَّهِ مَا سَمِعْنَا فِيمَا سَمِعْنَا مِنْ نَبِيِّكُمْ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَا بَلَغَ عِلْمَنَا إِلَّا أَنَّ حَمَمَةَ شَهِيدٌ

English Translation
ʿAffān narrated to us, Abū ʿAwānah narrated to us, Dāwūd ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Awdī narrated to us, from Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥimyarī, that a man called Ḥamamah, who was a Companion of Muḥammad ﷺ, went out to Aṣbahān as a warrior during the caliphate of ʿUmar رضي الله تعالى عنه. He said: 'O Allah, Ḥamamah claims that he loves meeting You. If Ḥamamah is truthful, then confirm his truthfulness. And if he is lying, then compel him even if he dislikes it. O Allah, do not return Ḥamamah from this journey of his.' He was then struck with a stomach illness and died in Aṣbahān. Abū Mūsā stood and said: 'O people, by Allah, we did not hear from what we heard from your Prophet ﷺ, nor did anything reach our knowledge, except that Ḥamamah is a martyr.'
