English Translation
Muhannaʿ ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd Abū Shibl narrated to us, Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Abū Qazaʿah, from Ḥakīm ibn Muʿāwiyah, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “There was a man among those before you whom Allah تبارك وتعالى had blessed abundantly with wealth and children. When a generation passed and another came, and death approached him, he said: ‘O my sons, what kind of father was I to you?’ They said: ‘The best of fathers.’ He said: ‘Will you obey me?’ They said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘When I die, burn me until I become charcoal.’” the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “They did that, by Allah. Then: ‘Grind me with the mortar.’” — gesturing with his hand. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “They did that, by Allah. ‘Then scatter me in the sea on a windy day, so that perhaps I may escape Allah تبارك وتعالى.’” the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “They did that, by Allah. And then he was in the grasp of Allah تبارك وتعالى. He said: ‘O son of Adam, what drove you to do what you did?’ He said: ‘O my Lord, fear of You.’ So Allah تبارك وتعالى pardoned him for that.”
