English Translation
Yaḥyā ibn Sa‘īd narrated to us, Bahz narrated to us — and Yazīd said: Bahz informed us, with the same meaning — my father narrated to me, from my grandfather, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ saying: “There was a servant among the servants of Allāh whom Allāh tabāraka wa ta‘ālā had given wealth and children, but he did not practice the religion of Allāh ‘azza wa jall.” Yazīd said: “He remained until a lifetime passed and another remained. Then he realized that he had stored no good with Allāh tabāraka wa ta‘ālā. He called his sons and said: O my sons, what kind of father do you know me to be? They said: The best, O our father. He said: By Allāh, I shall not leave any wealth with any man among you without taking it from him, or you will do as I command you. He took a covenant from them and said: As for this — when I die, take me and cast me into the fire until I become charcoal, then crush me.” The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ [gestured] with his hand upon his thigh as if to say: Grind me, then scatter me in the wind, so that I might escape Allāh tabāraka wa ta‘ālā. That was done to him, by the Lord of Muḥammad, when he died. He was brought in the most complete form and presented before his Lord tabāraka wa ta‘ālā, Who said: ‘What drove you to [order] the fire?’ He said: ‘My fear of You, O my Lord.’ He said: ‘I surely hear one who is fearful’ — Yazīd said: ‘I hear you are fearful’ — ‘so he was forgiven.’ Bahz said: I narrated this hadith to al-Ḥasan and Qatādah, and they both narrated it back to me: ‘So he was forgiven’ — or: ‘Allāh ‘azza wa jall forgave him.’ Yaḥyā was uncertain.
