Hadith #82

English Translation

Yazīd narrated to us, he said: al-Jurayrī informed us, from Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, from Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a military expedition. We hastened the return and did well in the spoils. When we came in view of the town, a man among us began to say the takbīr — he said: I think he said: at the top of his voice. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: O people — and he gestured with his hand like this — Yazīd described it as though he was waving — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘O people, you are not calling upon one who is deaf or absent. The One you are calling upon is closer than the heads of your riding animals.’ Then he said: ‘O ʿAbd Allāh ibn Qays — or O Abū Mūsā — shall I not guide you to a word from the treasures of Paradise?’ I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: ‘Say: Lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā bi-llāh.’
