حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بِشْرٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ مَا قَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى الْجِنِّ وَلَا رَآهُمْ انْطَلَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي طَائِفَةٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ عَامِدِينَ إِلَى سُوقِ عُكَاظٍ وَقَدْ حِيلَ بَيْنَ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَبَيْنَ خَبَرِ السَّمَاءِ وَأُرْسِلَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ الشُّهُبُ قَالَ فَرَجَعَتْ الشَّيَاطِينُ إِلَى قَوْمِهِمْ فَقَالُوا مَا لَكُمْ قَالُوا حِيلَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ خَبَرِ السَّمَاءِ وَأُرْسِلَتْ عَلَيْنَا الشُّهُبُ قَالَ فَقَالُوا مَا حَالَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ خَبَرِ السَّمَاءِ إِلَّا شَيْءٌ حَدَثَ فَاضْرِبُوا مَشَارِقَ الْأَرْضِ وَمَغَارِبَهَا فَانْظُرُوا مَا هَذَا الَّذِي حَالَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ خَب
َرِ السَّمَاءِ قَالَ فَانْطَلَقُوا يَضْرِبُونَ مَشَارِقَ الْأَرْضِ وَمَغَارِبَهَا يَبْتَغُونَ مَا هَذَا الَّذِي حَالَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ خَبَرِ السَّمَاءِ قَالَ فَانْصَرَفَ النَّفَرُ الَّذِينَ تَوَجَّهُوا نَحْوَ تِهَامَةَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ بِنَخْلَةَ عَامِدًا إِلَى سُوقِ عُكَاظٍ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي بِأَصْحَابِهِ صَلَاةَ الْفَجْرِ قَالَ فَلَمَّا سَمِعُوا الْقُرْآنَ اسْتَمَعُوا لَهُ وَقَالُوا هَذَا وَاللَّهِ الَّذِي حَالَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ خَبَرِ السَّمَاءِ قَالَ فَهُنَالِكَ حِينَ رَجَعُوا إِلَى قَوْمِهِمْ فَقَالُوا يَا قَوْمَنَا { إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْآنًا عَجَبًا يَهْدِي إِلَى الرُّشْدِ فَآمَنَّا بِهِ } الْآيَةَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَى نَبِيِّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ { قُلْ أُوحِيَ إِلَيَّ أَنَّهُ } وَإِنَّمَا أُوحِيَ إِلَيْهِ قَوْلُ الْجِنِّ

English Translation
'Affan narrated to us, Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, Abu Bishr narrated to us, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not recite Quran to the jinn nor did he see them. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out with a group of his Companions heading for the market of 'Ukaz, and the devils had been prevented from obtaining news of the heavens and shooting stars were sent upon them. The devils returned to their people who asked: "What is wrong with you?" They said: "We have been prevented from news of the heavens and shooting stars were sent upon us." They said: "Nothing has prevented you from news of the heavens except something that has happened. Search the east and west of the earth and see what it is." So they set out searching east and west. The group that headed toward Tihamah came upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Nakhlah while he was heading for the market of 'Ukaz, praying the Fajr prayer with his Companions. When they heard the Quran, they listened to it and said: "By Allah, this is what has prevented you from news of the heavens." They returned to their people and said: {O our people, indeed we have heard a wondrous Quran; it guides to the right course, and we have believed in it} [al-Jinn 72:1-2]. Then Allah revealed to His Prophet ﷺ: {Say: It has been revealed to me} [al-Jinn 72:1] — and what was revealed to him was the account of the jinn.
