Amr ibn al-As, may Allah be pleased with him, was a brilliant military strategist, diplomat, and companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who embraced Islam in 8 AH, just before the conquest of Mecca. He was one of the most capable commanders in early Islamic history and led the Muslim army in the conquest of Egypt in 19–21 AH, permanently incorporating it into the Islamic world. He served as Egypt's governor twice and was known for his sharp intelligence, political acumen, and administrative skill. Before Islam, he had been a leader of the Quraysh and had traveled on diplomatic missions representing them. He narrated hadiths from the Prophet on sincere repentance, the virtues of dying while engaged in good deeds, prayer, and righteous conduct. His famous narration on the hadith that 'Islam removes all that came before it' is among the most fundamental statements in Islamic theology regarding repentance and conversion. He also recorded hadiths in his own private compilation. He died in Egypt around 43 AH, reportedly at an advanced age. His narrations appear in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and all major Sunan collections.
