عبدالله بن جحش الأسدي
Abd Allah ibn Jahsh al-Asadi (died 3 AH / 625 CE) was a senior Companion of the Prophet ﷺ and the leader of the first military expedition in Islamic history. He was a cousin of the Prophet ﷺ through his mother Umayma bint Abd al-Muttalib, and he embraced Islam early, emigrating to Abyssinia with the first group of Muslim refugees.
The Prophet ﷺ appointed him to lead the Sariyyat Nakhlah — the expedition to Nakhlah near Mecca in 2 AH, which resulted in the first armed encounter between Muslims and Quraysh. During the sacred month, his group killed a Meccan trader named Amr ibn al-Hadrami, sparking controversy about fighting in the sacred months. Revelation came partially vindicating the action in the context of Quraysh's greater oppression (Quran 2:217).
He participated in the Battle of Badr and distinguished himself in combat. At the Battle of Uhud in 3 AH, he reportedly prayed that Allah would grant him death as a martyr — a supplication he made alongside Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas before the battle. He was martyred at Uhud, his body mutilated by Qurayshi fighters. The Prophet ﷺ was deeply grieved by his death.
Abd Allah ibn Jahsh was buried alongside his friend Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the uncle of the Prophet, in a single grave. His martyrdom at Uhud and his leadership of the first Islamic military expedition make him a historically significant figure in the formation of the Muslim community's military and political identity.
