Abdullah ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, was the cousin of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and is universally regarded as the greatest Quranic exegete among the companions. He was born three years before the Hijra and was still a young boy at the time of the Prophet's death, but the Prophet had made a special supplication for him: 'O Allah, give him deep understanding of religion and teach him the interpretation of the Quran.' This prayer was visibly answered throughout Ibn Abbas's life. He devoted himself after the Prophet's death to learning from senior companions and is said to have waited at the door of a companion for an entire day in order to ask a single question. He narrated over 1,600 hadiths and became the foremost authority on Quranic tafsir, earning the titles Hibr al-Ummah (Scholar of the Nation) and Turjuman al-Quran (Interpreter of the Quran). Thousands of students traveled to sit in his famous teaching circles in Ta'if and Mecca. His commentary on the Quran formed the foundation of the entire classical tafsir tradition. He died in Ta'if around 68 AH. This is a variant entry for the same companion.
