Usama ibn Zayd ibn Haritha (may Allah be pleased with him) was deeply beloved by the Prophet ﷺ, who called him 'my beloved, and the son of my beloved.' His father Zayd ibn Haritha was the freed slave and adoptive son of the Prophet ﷺ before the prohibition of adoption as full kinship, and Usama grew up in the Prophet's household. He was appointed by the Prophet ﷺ to lead a military expedition to the northern Arabian frontier at approximately eighteen years of age — a young age that prompted some criticism from older Companions, which the Prophet ﷺ firmly rejected, saying that Usama was worthy of the command just as his father had been before him. He narrated approximately 128 hadiths from the Prophet ﷺ on theology, prayer, and ethical conduct. He is known for a narration on the prohibition of killing someone who has already uttered the testimony of faith even in battle. He settled in al-Jurf near Medina after the Prophet's death and passed away around 54–59 AH.
