Abu Qatada al-Ansari, whose full name was al-Harith ibn Rib'i al-Khazraji, was a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ from the Ansar of Medina renowned for his bravery and skill in battle. The Prophet ﷺ referred to him as 'one of the best horsemen of the Ansar.' He participated in many military expeditions and is known for several specific acts of personal courage. He narrated approximately 170 hadiths from the Prophet ﷺ on topics including prayer, purification, fasting, hunting, and the Prophet's conduct. Among his best-known narrations is the account of the Prophet ﷺ praying while carrying his granddaughter Umama bint Abi al-As — placing her down during prostration and picking her up when he rose — a narration frequently cited in discussions of what does or does not interrupt the prayer. He also narrated hadiths on the beginning times of the five daily prayers. He settled in Damascus after the Prophet's death and later in Kufa. He passed away around 54 AH. This is a variant spelling of the Companion also listed as Abu Qatada.
