Abu al-Darda' (RA), whose full name was Uwaymir ibn Malik ibn Zayd al-Ansari al-Khazraji, was from the Ansar of Medina. He embraced Islam after the Battle of Badr — reportedly having been the last of the Khazraj leaders to convert. Despite his late conversion he quickly distinguished himself through his extraordinary wisdom, deep piety, and asceticism. The Prophet ﷺ established a bond of brotherhood between him and Salman al-Farsi (RA), and Salman's famous counsel to Abu al-Darda' about balancing worship with the rights of the body became one of the most celebrated statements on moderation in Islamic tradition. He narrated approximately 179 hadiths. He was sent by Caliph Uthman to Damascus as a teacher and judge, where he remained until his death. He passed away around 32 AH. He is revered as one of the great ascetics and sages of the companion generation.
