Al-Ahnaf ibn Qais al-Tamimi was a leading Tabi'i figure from Basra renowned for his extraordinary forbearance, wisdom, and eloquence. He was born during the time of the Prophet ﷺ and narrated from several companions including Abu Bakr, Umar, Ali, and Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with them. He did not personally meet the Prophet ﷺ, making him technically a Tabi'i, but he was in contact with the most senior companions throughout his life. He was famous throughout the Arab world for his patience and was cited as a proverbial example: when asked about forbearance, Arabs would say, 'Learn forbearance from al-Ahnaf.' He played a significant role in early Islamic governance in Basra and the broader eastern regions. He was also a renowned orator whose counsel was sought by caliphs. He was known for his depth of political and religious wisdom. He died around 72 AH. His narrations appear in Sahih al-Bukhari and the Sunan collections and are valued both for their prophetic content and for the insight they provide into the character and conduct of the senior companions.
