Hafsa bint Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with her), also referred to as Hafsah Ummul Mu'minin, was a wife of the Prophet ﷺ and one of the Mothers of the Believers. She was the daughter of Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second Caliph, and was previously married to Khunays ibn Hudhayfah who died after participating in the Battle of Badr. She was known for her intense piety — fasting frequently and standing long in night prayer. She was one of the few Companions who was highly literate, having been taught to read and write by al-Shifa bint Abdallah at Umar's request. She is of great historical significance as the custodian of the first written compilation of the Quran assembled under Abu Bakr: these scrolls were kept with her and later used as the reference text for the Uthmanic standardization. She narrated approximately sixty hadiths from the Prophet ﷺ. She passed away in Medina around 45 AH.
